DIY Bug Collecting Kit

It’s bug week here at our house and the kids are having a great time learning all about insects and other creepy crawlies.  One thing I was missing was a bug collecting kit for the kids to use to explore while outside.  There are many to be found but, due to my home daycare, those simply won’t work because…WAY too many kids. Because I thought they would really enjoy it, and it played into our goal of a screen-free summer, I created my very own DIY Bug Collecting Kit and it has been tested and kid approved!

Before putting this together I spent some time looking at sets currently for sale.  There were a few I did like, like this one. But there was no way they were going to work because one pair of tweezers and one bug house simply wouldn’t do for my oversized crew.

I also thought about items I had on hand that could be applied so my out of pocket expense wasn’t bad at all and I ended up with a kit that could be used by 5+ kiddos all at once!

So, what’s in our bug collecting kit?

I included…

SainSmart Jr. Critter Cages

Kid friendly tweezers (like these)

Jumbo Eyedroppers

A copy of Bugs A to Z (for identifying found critters)

As well as a few coffee filters and popsicle sticks then stored it all in an empty ice cream container…laugh away but they’re perfect for storing toys! 😉

What did the kids think?

I’d say they’re fans!

Best of all, that whole group of kids was able to enjoy the kit together with no arguing, I’ll call that a win any day!  If you have any questions or more ideas I’d love to hear from you!

Happy Bug Hunting!
